It's not just the Pentagon that is "sponsoring" opinion. Corporations do this sort of thing all the time.

Perhaps a standard question at the start of any journalist's interview should be "do you have any financial relationship or other loyalty that creates a conflict of interest regarding the matter we are discussing today?".
