Time Poor
You will have noticed that Im not posting very often. A lot going on for me and just no time - although at least the Del.icio.us links feed is working again to keep this site vaguely alive. However, if I did have time here are some of the things I would blog about:
1. The BBC's multimedia Indian train
2. A brave (read foolish) push back on Jay Rosen's attack on "He said/she said" journalism
3. Thoughts on the growing need for more open, flexible, dis-aggregated organisations to adapt to the digital revolution
4. Some (non-partisan) thoughts on the failure of both government and police to culturally adapt to at least some aspects of the digital age - and lessons in crisis management and trust.
5. Changes in the attitude of some Middle East governments to openness in the face of the digital onslaught of services and diversity of opinion.
6. My relationship with The Blues which with surprise I realise I've been listening to for 45 years....
7. Some thoughts on music journalism and writing spurred by latest reading
There are probably others. But you know what? If I dont get around to any of them, who will know or care?!

Now, in a kind of Hearstian twist, the news media are supplying both the pictures and the war. “Bring your kids and experience history,” Glenn Beck advised on Fox News as he invited people to join him at the Alamo for a tax day protest, because, he said, “our kids are being sold into slavery.” It was a kind of al fresco Howard Beale moment...

Aron Pilhofer explains the importance of Matt Waite's Pulitzer Prize for his PolitiFact project. Aron sums up and attempts to put to rest whether projects like PolitiFact are journalism. He writes: "PolitiFact is simple, scalable and smart. But is it journalism, some people asked? There's no lead per se, no narrative and no pyramids anywhere to be found, much less the inverted sort. Journalism is about helping people make sense of important issues, and how those issues affect them personally. It's about uncovering that which someone wants to keep hidden. It's about holding people we place in high public office accountable. And by those definitions -- or any other you wish to find -- PolitiFact more than meets the test." HT kevin Anderson
Kevin: Suw and I had the pleasure of meeting Nick Bilton, who kindly gave us a tour of the New York Times R&D lab. Our friend Jason Brush at Schematic put us in touch after seeing we were in New York from Twitter. Nick showed us the future thinking of the news at the Times including news that follows users through their day from mobile to desktop or laptop computer and then home to their media centre. It's the kind of user-centred thinking that more newspapers need to adopt. Rather than thinking of how they'd like people to consume their content, they need to find out how people actually use it and dispense with wishful thinking and assumptions. Check out the video.

What ties all this together is ignorance of foreign affairs in news media due to a lack of correspondents on the ground. In the current cases of Somalia and Sri Lanka, mind you, the obstacles to reporters covering the stories are larger than normal budgetary issues of staffing cuts abroad. But the point is these situations show us what it's like when Western news organisations -- for whatever reason -- do not have long-serving correspondents on the ground: when they have no eyes and ears following the situation directly, understanding the complexities and able to report more deeply than "hero saved" or simply ignore it all together. A respected staffer in a field bureau is able to call the editor back home and say, "there's something big going down here", "in all my years here, I've never seen anything like this before", and "this is news; we need to cover this". Without anyone making that pitch internally, the chance of missing out is always going to be greater.
