Local newspaper reporters don't often get obituaries in national media. Dave Berry is rightly an exception. When I briefly worked on the South Wales Echo decades ago Dave was on the desk behind me. Education Correspondent, investigative reporter, film buff and reviewer, a flair for language and the driest wit I had ever encountered. Meticulous and exacting in his journalism if not his grooming - he always looked as if he had been dragged through the proverbial hedge backwards and his asthma made him wheeze frequently. It was part of his unique charm. But he was one of those colleagues whose approval, sparsely given, was much cherished. A warm and talented man, a great reporter, and the definitive historian of Welsh film. Fondly remembered.
