Hitch Quotes:
"I still make sure to go at least once every year to a country where things cannot be taken for granted and where there is either too much law and order or too little"
"There are certain things you can't get second-hand and one of those is the smell of the reality. The actual effect on the nostrils is very important"
Christopher Hitchens. Sage advice.
Living in Vietnam...something struck me last week.
Despite government censorship and the recent blocking of Facebook here, what's left in terms of social media still means...
People in Vietnam have more of a "voice" than I did in the UK only ten years ago.
It seems incredible that, for the most part, the only redress I had was to write a letter to a newspaper or my MP. And every single time I did that it was ignored.
Interesting times we live in.
Before anyone argues, I am not saying that you can compare human rights in the UK and Vietnam. And I am not saying that it'd go down very well if you used your voice to criticise the government. But, in many cases, social media can still be used to raise awareness of issues not directly linked to democracy.
